The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC)

The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture aims at stimulating and supporting creativity, critical thinking and freedom of expression in the Arab region.

Why?

• To enhance cultural production and research within different countries in the region
• To stimulate cultural exchanges and collaborations across the Arab region
• To create a sustainable source of funding for independent cultural work in the region

To Do What?

• Make grants to support the production of books, catalogues, plays, art exhibitions, music albums and films
• Give financial support to regional cultural events such as conferences and festivals, especially those that address important cultural and political issues
• Give travel grants to writers and artists and organizers of cultural events to support participation in regional cultural events and exchanges
• Award two major regional prizes to prominent cultural figures, one in the Arts and one in Literature
• Award five prizes to distinguished writers and artists, in theatre, music, film, visual arts and literature, whose work carries exceptional merit
• Give financial support to a small number of cultural organizations that operate in difficult environments or that provide important cultural services

How?

• Establish an independently governed fund, with an international board of trustees, that is based in the region and manned by professionals from the region
• Maintain good connections with already existing local and regional cultural organizations and agencies
• Develop media strategies that would increase awareness of the fund and elicit political support

How To Help?

• Make a pledge to the fund. Your pledge could include certain conditions such as geographic area, art form, social group, etc. A pledge of a substantial nature would give the donor the opportunity to join the board of trustees
• Suggest ideas for fundraising, and for the fund’s activities and governance
• Spread the word! Tell others about the fund and send us names of individuals or entities you think maybe interested in providing support.

Your financial contribution will be matched by international donors such as the Open Society Institute, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Authority, and the Ford Foundation.
